‘Parking Lot’: Guys, Cars And The Meaning Of Life : NPR
I just watched this documentary via Netflix Instant Watch and really enjoyed it. Perhaps it’s because I completely sympathize with the subjects, but it was really well done.
I’ve worked service type jobs for most of my life. It’s not my dream, but it’s not something I am ashamed of. Well, that’s a half truth…sometimes I am a bit ashamed, but other times I realize that where I work doesn’t make up who I actually am. A lot of the people you serve do think that way though. They assume that because you are performing a task for them that you must be an uninspired idiot and in return we assume you are a self-centered asshole. Perhaps that is true at times but it isn’t true for everybody.
I guess one thing that I try to take away from working these types of jobs is that treating people kindly can go a long way. Not necessarily being fake, but just being aware that there is always more than meets the eye.
One summer, while in college, I was back at my normal job working in an office. This particular summer I was an assistant to the head of sales. One day I had to wake up and drive to a gas station at 5am, where I would be doing a promo for Green Mountain Coffee. When I got there I was told to go to the backroom where I would find my supplies. I was provided with a backpack, that looked identical to a jetpack, that was filled with coffee. It had a spout attached to it so that I could spray shots of coffee into little paper cups for customers. It was entirely embarrassing, incredibly hot, and I got coffee all over me. People would laugh and one customer told me that I should have went to college. That pissed me off more than anything and ultimately I refused to ever take part in that again.
That story makes me laugh when I look back on it just because of how ridiculous I looked. It’s a prime example of how people are towards people in retail. That guy had no idea what my life was like. I was going to college and doing well and working hard. I just happened to be home for the summer and working so that I could save some money. I always say, people turn into a different being once they are a customer.
I don’t plan to be working those types of jobs forever. I’ve had chances to get out and haven’t taken them because my energy felt it needed to be concentrated on something else. I will always try and give people who serve me the benefit of the doubt though.
Main point, check out this documentary if you have the time. It’s about a small world that is all to representative of the big world. The guys in this film are incredibly smart and may make you think twice.
