For the past couple weeks I’ve been listening to a weird collection of bands on a constant rotation. Appleseed Cast, Ingrid Michaelson, Gang Starr, Nada Surf, and mostly The Starting Line. They were one of my top bands while a teenager and to this day I still love them. “Say It Like You Mean It” and the “With Hopes of Starting Over” EP were records that I listened to so much. Once I went away to college though I began to branch a bit away from that genre of music though and discover some new things, but there is still a part of me that will always be a 16 year old, driving in my car, singing every word to every song.
Recently though, I decided to start listening to their last 2 records and honestly, I love them. Maybe it’s weird getting into them as a 26 year old on the verge of getting married, but those guys make some great music. For me, it goes beyond nostalgia with them. I’d say they’re in my top 10 bands of all time.
It got me thinking a bit though. Will I still blast this music when I’m 60? Will I still listen to any of my current music when I’m that old? I can see certain bands growing old with me. Kevin Devine, Wilco, etc. Will those pop-punk records be something that still hold weight though? The way that our elders revel in artists like Elvis and Sinatra, will we be playing albums off of Drive-Thru records and telling our grandkids of the “good ol’ days”?
I came across this video while watching a ton of Starting Line videos and it’s been killing me.
